I used the ones from bed, bath, and beyond. They are great. Most of the ones from target are really big and they fit through. Can i make a guinea pig cage out of the grids from bed, bath, and beond or from Target?I need lots of answers!?
The only thing you need to be careful of is that you get the correct type of grids.
The oringal style (that most c+ cages are made from) are 9x9 holes across, so each gap is only 1.5 inches wide.
The newer grids have fewer, much larger holes, which guinea pigs may get their heads through and get stuck.
Just count the holes. If they are 9x9 the grids are good.
Please ignore the awful advice to just use a petstore cage - they are overpriced and far too small. And the advice to use a grid floor is downright dangerous - grid floors cause serious injuries and pododermatitis.
Good luck!
don't use cardboard inside any rodent cage. It will be chewed up very quickly. Use hard plastic that's very thick for a guinea or metal. You can use metal wire from a pet store or hardware store to build a cage. For a guinea I would recommend getting a big rubbermaid container the size you want, and making wire sides and top that fit snuggly down into it as high as you like. Then put a door on top. Buy a roll of square wire that's sturdy next to the chicken wire at your local hardware store, and buy these little metal bands that can be crimped to hold wire together. You can either leave nothing on the bottom of the cage and use bedding, or put a wire piece on the bottom that is made a little big so it doesn't fit all the way to the bottom to leave some space. This screen needs to be smaller to be comfortable for walking or laying on, but not too small as to pinch toes, and then the poop won't fall through.
I would just go to a pet store, I think Petco has pretty good deals with the stuff you will need, but petsmart may have some cheap prices too...Cardboard is not a good idea because they will chew right through it!
hope i helped(:
